Teen Heart Transplant Patient, Yankees Outfielder Brett Gardner Meet Again After Historic Home Run

NEW YORK (WCBS 880)  -- They are definitely each other's good luck charm.

Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and 18-year-old Alyssa Esposito of Long Island met at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital on May 15, while she was on the waiting list for a heart transplant.

WCBS Reporter Marla Diamond talks with both of them about their lucky day.

Esposito gave the baseball player a "Project Sunshine" bracelet and told him to hit a home run.

"I don't know if she said hit a home run for me...I think she worded more like, this will make you hit a home run," said Gardner.

And he did.

In fact, Gardner hit the first 'in the park' home run by a Yankee in a decade. That night after a four-month wait, Esposito got her new heart.

LISTEN: Brett Gardner's home run call from that night.

"I thought it was pretty cool. I thought it was cool how it happened," siad Esposito.

Gardner says he's not supersticious, but if the Yankees make the playoffs, he just might have to start seeing Alyssa everyday.
