Are the Odds in Yankees Favor?

NEW YORK (WCBS 880)  -- So, what are the odds that the Yankees will win the World Series?

WCBS Reporter Levon Putney talks with an expert, NJIT Applied Mathematician Dr. Bruce Bukiet.

"A 70 percent chance of the Yankees winning the World Series. I go game by game, and each game it depends on the lineup, which is pretty much set," said Bukiet.

Bukiet used regular season stats and explains a math model that considers the order of events in a game.

"So, you have to take each player's performance, how often they get a second, double, triple homerun etc. in the order that they bat in the lineup," said Bukiet.

Also, how often that output leads to runs scored.

A 70 percent chance of winning the World Series is pretty good, and since Dr. Bukiet is from Long Island, Putney had to ask if there is any bias...

"I don't think so. I grew up for many years being a lonely Mets fan among Yankees fans," said Bukiet.

Watching baseball games and crunching numbers is a "fun way to apply math".
