Election Do-Over Ordered in Bergen County

HACKENSACK, NJ (AP)  -- A New Jersey judge has ordered a special election for a seat on the Park Ridge Borough Council because of irregularities in the down-to-the-wire race.

Democrat Kenneth Brouwer was declared the winner of the Nov. 3 election over Republican Steven Hopper by only eight votes.

Hopper says a dozen people who didn't even live in town cast ballots.

In hearings, 11 people admitted they voted though they didn't live there.

Among them were two men who serve as police officers in other communities and moved out of Park Ridge years ago.

New candidates can join the special election. Judge Robert C. Wilson ruled Wednesday that the special election must be held within two months.
