Congressman John Larson says Democrats Might Support Oil Drilling, With Conditions
|
WASHINGTON -- In a three-week session before breaking for the November elections, House Democrats plan to push an energy plan that will include a limited expansion of offshore drilling.
In the party's weekly radio address, Congressman John Larson of Connecticut says while considering drilling, Democrats will also demand that oil companies either use or return the leases they have already been issued.
A senior House Democratic aide says the offshore drilling proposal will be similar to a compromise measure that's been floated in the Senate. It would allow oil and gas drilling in federal waters in the Atlantic, from Virginia to Georgia. Drilling in eastern Gulf of Mexico off Florida would also be allowed, witha
50-mile protected buffer from shore.
In addition to drilling, Larson says energy needs also need to be addressed with a federal renewable electricity standard that promotes alternative forms of energy. |
