Cost-Cutting 9/11 Memorial Redesigns Presented to Mayor, Pataki

NEW YORK (AP)  -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor Pataki heard several proposals yesterday to redesign the September 11th memorial -- including one that will raise the list of names of those killed to street level.

The Associated Press has learned that the proposal, which would also slightly reduce the size of a 9/11 museum, was one that greatly interested Bloomberg and Pataki.

Developer Frank Sciame presented several design options to cut the memorial's budget to $500 million. Contractors said last month that the memorial would cost nearly one billion dollars to build, prompting a call for a redesign.

The governor's and mayor's offices said in a statement that they are reviewing the options and will issue a report next week. A new, less expensive memorial design was promised by the end of the month.

Some September 11th family members have lobbied to move the list of names to street level, saying they had safety concerns.
