Deadline Looms Over CT Lawmakers

HARTFORD, CT (AP)  -- Connecticut lawmakers are returning to the Capitol, pushing a deadline to finish their legislative work before the General Assembly session adjourns at midnight Wednesday.

The state Senate and House of Representatives both face scores of proposed bills, including budgetary issues.

Mayors, union leaders and activists for the poor have pushed legislators to amend the new $18.5 billion budget that takes effect July 1. However, Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell and the legislature's majority Democrats have decided against any changes so far.

Legislative Republicans want the budget changed because of the state's projected $68 million deficit. An attempt to revise the figures failed Monday night in the House session.
