STAMFORD, CT (AP) -- A 33-year-old woman and her mother are doing well after a driving lesson in Cove Island Park in Stamford ended with their sport utility vehicle taking an unexpected plunge into the water.
Bystanders rescued a 53-year-old woman and her daughter after the incident over the weekend. Police say the daughter was teaching her mother to drive in the parking lot when she slammed on the gas pedal instead of the brake.
Police say the car lunged forward, over a 6-inch retaining wall and into the water, where it floated out 30 feet from the shore before sinking.
Police say several bystanders jumped into the water and took the mother, who couldn't swim, and her daughter to shore.
