PLAINVIEW, NY (AP) -- A Nassau County police officer is hospitalized in serious condition after he was rear-ended on the shoulder of the Long Island Expressway.
Nassau police say Officer Kenneth Baribault, 30, had stopped a black SUV and was investigating whether the driver was intoxicated just before 6 a.m. Sunday.
While he was sitting in his police car, a silver Mercedes Benz veered onto the shoulder and rear-ended him. The police car was propelled forward and struck the black SUV.
Both drivers of the SUV and Mercedes were charged with driving while intoxicated. Police say additional charges are pending against the Mercedes driver, Rahiem Graffin, 27, of Shirley. Telephone numbers for both drivers weren't listed.
