Driver Loses Control of Car in Forest Hills, Blames Toyota Malfunction

NEW YORK (WCBS 880)  -- The bushes in front of the Forest Hill Jewish Center are crushed.

WCBS reporter Ginny Kosola says the elderly driver of the 2009 Toyota Corolla and his wife were taken to a nearby hospital, but police say they were not seriously injured.

The driver said his car malfunctioned and it careened off the Queens Boulevard service road onto the yard of the Jewish Center.

Executive Director of the Forest Hills Jewish Center described the crash to Kosola.

"The car was up on the lawn, wedged up against the front steps of the synagogue. There was red transmission fluid leaking out from under it, the bumper was pretty well smashed. Uh, the elderly gentleman who was the driver of the car, was sitting on the steps of the synagogue," said Gregor.

Police say the car will be examined to determine what happened.

Police tell WCBS 880 that they are unsure if the driver was having problems with the brakes or the accelerator.
