QUEENS (AP) -- Three people have died and five others were hospitalized Sunday when fire ravaged a three-story building in Queens.
The two-alarm fire was first reported at 7:36 a.m. in a building in Middle Village with a deli on the ground floor and apartments on the second and third floors. Firefighters said some of the victims jumped from a third-story window to escape the flames.
One man was dead at the scene, three people were in critical condition at area hospitals and two are still in serious condition.
Radio station 1010 WINS reported that a man and a woman walked into a nearby deli on fire and the store owner doused them with bottled water.
Six firefighters suffered minor injuries. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
