Tuesday's event, organized by a think tank called Connecticut Voices for Children, comes about a week before the General Assembly opens its new legislative session with the two-year, $37.6 billion state budget in a deficit of about $500 million.

Issues such as the economic role of state government and the value of state business tax credits will be discussed at the forum.

The legislative session opens on Feb. 3. Gov. M. Jodi Rell, a Republican, will address a joint session of the General Assembly and unveil her proposed changes to the second year of the two-year budget.
