It's Judgment Day for a New Jersey Imam

NEWARK, NJ (AP)  -- An influential Muslim cleric in New Jersey has arrived at the federal courthouse in Newark to fight deportation.

Imam Mohammad Qatanani was accompanied by his wife and 6 children.

LISTEN: Supporters Will Rally

Several hundred supporters are across the street, chanting in Arabic and carrying signs and U.S. flags.

Qatanani has been in the U.S. since 1996 and has headed the Islamic Center of Passaic County. He was instrumental in reaching out to law enforcement agencies after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Immigration authorities say Qatanani didn't disclose a conviction in an Israeli military court on his citizenship application. The imam says he was convicted in absentia and not notified.

The trial is scheduled to last through Monday.
