Jones Beach Water Tower Gets Make-Over

WANTAGH, N.Y. (AP)  -- The 231-foot landmark water tower that welcomes millions of visitors to Jones Beach every summer is getting a face-lift.

The tower is modeled after the Campanile, the brick bell tower that overlooks the Piazza San Marco in Venice. Its copper roof and steel frame and portions of deteriorating brick and limestone will be replaced as part of a $3.3 million renovation. The rehab should take about 18 months.

The decorative tower holds 315,000 gallons of fresh water used to run the sinks and flush the toilets throughout the massive state park on Long Island's south shore.

About 7 million people visit Jones Beach every year.
