TRENTON, NJ (AP)  -- Incumbent Democrat Frank Lautenberg leads his Republican opponent as he seeks re-election to the U.S. Senate.

That's according to a new Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll out today, which also finds many voters remain uncommitted.

The poll finds Lautenberg leading Dick Zimmer 45 percent to 37 percent among likely voters. And only 64 percent of Republicans are willing to support Zimmer less than four months before the Nov. 4 election.

But 21 percent of independents surveyed remain on the fence, and 20 percent of independents say they may vote for a third-party candidate.

The state has 1.7 million Democratic and 1 million Republican voters, but 2.2 million independent voters.a
