Lincoln Tunnel Roadways Closed for Investigation

NEW YORK (AP)  -- A suspicious bottle on a roadway outside the Lincoln Tunnel has brought rush hour traffic leaving and entering New York City to a standstill.

A Port Authority spokesman says a police investigation closed the eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 495 going in and out of the tunnel from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

Car traffic outside the tunnel was diverted to local streets in New Jersey. Commuter buses were held at Manhattan's Port Authority Bus Terminal, where thousands of commuters fumed.

Police determined the bottle was harmless.

The incident has caused residual delays of at least an hour.

On Wednesday, tunnel traffic was diverted to local roads for several hours due to two bottles filled with an unidentified liquid that were found not to be hazardous.
