New York Mets Fire Manager Willie Randolph

ANAHEIM, CA (AP / WCBS 880)  -- Willie Randolph is out as manager of the New York Mets, fired in the middle of the night 2 months into a disappointing season that has followed the team's colossal collapse last September.

LISTEN: Minaya Explains Firing Randolph

Bench coach Jerry Manuel takes over on an interim basis for Randolph, who led the Mets to within one win of the 2006 World Series. They got off to a strong start again last year but plummeted down the stretch and have been unable to rebound.

A preseason favorite to win the NL pennant, the $138 million Mets (34-35) had won two in a row when Randolph was let go early Tuesday morning - making him the first major league manager to get fired this season.

Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto also were dismissed in an enormous overhaul that was revealed in a fact-of-the-matter Mets news release at a stunning time - about 12:15 a.m. PDT, nearly two hours after New York's 9-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Ken Oberkfell, the club's manager at Triple-A New Orleans, and Dan Warthen, pitching coach for the Zephyrs, will join the major league staff along with Luis Aguayo, a Mets field coordinator.

The New York Post's Joel Sherman tells WCBS, "I think this is amaeteur hour."

A message left for general manager Omar Minaya was not immediately returned. The Mets said Minaya and Manuel would be available to reporters at Angel Stadium at 2 p.m. PDT on Tuesday.

Reached by phone nearly three hours after Monday's game, Mets utility man Marlon Anderson said he didn't know that Randolph had been fired and he didn't want to comment until he heard the news from a member of the team.

``Not tonight,'' Anderson said.

It was a frustrating end for the 53-year-old Randolph, who was set to be an NL coach at the All-Star game at Yankee Stadium next month.

Signed through the 2009 season, Randolph won't be able to move with the Mets into new Citi Field next year, either.

Randolph was known for his exceptionally steady play as a six-time All-Star second baseman and even-keel demeanor as a coach with the Yankees.

Yet Randolph's time in charge of the Mets was marked by highs and lows from the get-go.

Hired by Minaya to replace Art Howe for the 2005 season, Randolph lost his first five games as a major league manager, then won the next six.

He nearly guided the Mets into the 2006 World Series, losing Game 7 of the NLCS to St. Louis on Yadier Molina's tiebreaking home run in the ninth inning.

The Mets and their fans were convinced 2007 would be their year. Poised for a big run, what followed was one of the biggest collapses in baseball history: Leading the NL East by seven games on Sept. 12, they lost 12 of their last 17 and missed the playoffs as Philadelphia rallied to win the division title.

Several times, Randolph tried to separate last season's failure and this season's struggle.

``I really felt we put last year behind us,'' he said last month. ``Any pressure we feel is because of staying in the mix and not reverting back to last year. I don't sense that at all. No one ever talks about it, no one ever brings it up, so if we are looking a little like we were last year, there's no correlation.''

Many Mets watchers, however, felt there was a carry-over effect. Injuries to Pedro Martinez, Moises Alou and Ryan Church, another down year by Carlos Delgado and a sudden slump by closer Billy Wagner didn't help.

With each stretch of inconsistent play, chants of ``Fire Willie!'' grew louder at Shea Stadium and on New York's sports talk radio station.

Despite a $138 million payroll, the highest in the National League, and the offseason addition of ace pitcher Johan Santana, the Mets never found their groove. Even when things briefly went their way, Randolph caused trouble.

Coming off an uplifting, two-game sweep at Yankee Stadium in mid-May, the first black manager in team history created a stir by suggesting in a newspaper interview that he was portrayed on Mets broadcasts differently than a white manager might be.

Randolph brought up the race issue as he detailed the way he's been shown by SNY, the team's TV network.

``Is it racial?'' Randolph was quoted. ``Huh? It smells a little bit. ... I don't know how to put my finger on it, but I think there's something there.''

A couple of days later, Randolph apologized to Mets ownership, SNY and his players ``for the unnecessary distraction'' he'd created.

Late last month, Randolph got a temporary reprieve when he met with ownership.

``Willie's job was never in danger going into this meeting,'' Minaya said after the session. ``Willie has my support. He has the support of our ownership. ... There is no limbo period. Willie is the manager.''

But no promises for the future were made.

Raised in Brooklyn, Randolph enjoyed many of his favorite and finest moments in the Bronx.

He played for the Yankees from 1976-88 and was a member of two World Series championship teams.

Surrounded by stars Reggie Jackson and Thurman Munson, characters Sparky Lyle and Mickey Rivers and volatile George Steinbrenner and Billy Martin, Randolph merely went about his business. He made for a good fit in pinstripes, and later became a Yankees co-captain.

Randolph batted .276 lifetime - he got 2,210 hits in 2,202 games - and never made an error in his 47 postseason appearances.

After finishing his playing career with the Mets in 1992, Randolph served as an assistant GM with the Yankees in 1993. The next year, he moved back onto the field and became their third-base coach, a post he held for 10 seasons.

He was part of the Yankees team that won four World Series titles, and was manager Joe Torre's bench coach in 2004. Before landing the Mets job, Randolph said he interviewed unsuccessfully for 11 or 12 managerial openings.

Randolph had Torre's full backing for the move over to Queens and they remained friends, filming a series of popular local TV commercials together.

Randolph was hired in November 2004 and, boosted by the addition of Carlos Beltran and Martinez, the Mets showed immediate improvement. They went 83-79 in his first year, stopping a slide of three straight dismal seasons.

The Mets did far better the next year, tying the crosstown Yankees for baseball's best regular-season record (97-65) and winning the NL East for the first time since 1988.

Making their first playoff appearance in six years, the Mets swept the Dodgers in the first round despite an injury-depleted pitching staff and went into the NLCS against the Cardinals with high expectations - those ended in Game 7.

Bad Job by The Mets
The Mets problems were not Willie's making, and firing him isn't going to solve them. He didn't hire the players who can't play in 2 consecutive games without landing on the DL, or give them bloated long-term contracts. I'm very disappointed in how this was handled. Necessary, but poorly done.
It is clear that a major shae up was needed and unfortunately Willie wasn't getting it done. The team had no fire, no passion and no heart. Omar deserves some of the blame as well. To have to make this change in CA. after a victory is poor timing. I think the younger Wilpon's finger prints are all over the timing and how it was done. Firing someone is never easy, but it could have been handled better. It is clear that a major shae up was needed and unfortunately Willie wasn't getting it done. Scapegoat
As a long time Mets fan, I am terribly disappointed and disgusted in the decision to fire Willie and the manner in which it was done. Certainly this man deserved better treatment than he received. The relief pitching, especially, has been awful, and what was done to improve it in the off-season? Omar has to know that he shoulders much of the blame on this one. Brutal firing!
If team wins it's the players. If team loses it's the manager. How is that logical?! Overpaid, overage players will never win ball games. If team wins it's the players. If team loses it's the manager. How is that logical?! Overpaid, overage players will never win ball games.

Fired the Wrong Person
The Mets fired the wrong person. Who hired all these high paying players? Willie? I thought George Steinbrenner was bad, but this is lower than he would go. The Mets are not going to improve with Willie gone. They should start earning their pay. The Mets fired the wrong person. Who hired all these high paying players? Willie? Return to Basics
Willie has more class than the front office will ever have.If you put your best players on the field and they do not perform in the clutch, then they are not worth the money they are paid. Look at the Minnesota Twins. They make great inexpensive draft picks.Teach Reyes to learn how to run the bases correctly and the Mets can easily be a 550 club and possibly be a wild card threat.Change the bull pen and look for a starting pitcher who can give you quality starts. BIG HUGE MISTAKE!!
Again the front office has proved its lack of good sense (and crassness in the manner they have treated Willie). Mr. Randolph is a professional in all aspects, and a superb field tactician. The Mets spent a whole lot of cash BUYING players who don't meld.(For, as said many times, "there is no I in team...."To expect him to meld a team from what management supplied, and then castigate him when he came up short, is ludicrous. And notice how professional willie has been over the whole debacle... Good for you Willie!! And for shame, Mr. Minaya.. Who
As a Yankee fan I can't help but sit back and reflect on how this all took place. For weeks Met fans have promoted the idea of Willie's demise, and I'm not sure that the source of all that talk was not initiated by the NY sports media. Now, a third rate organization (Mets)has taken the bait and pulled the trigger in a most embarrasing situation for most NY fans. Just when I was beginning to think that this city had become a 2 true ballclub town to be proud of. As a Yankee fan I can't help but sit back and reflect on how this all took place. Mets fans should boycott the remainder of the season. Let this disfunctional group play in a vacant ballpark. Omar Minaya and the Wilpon crew have provided the fans with an insult of a team. We can only hope that the Wilpons sell the team to someone who actually cares about the game of baseball and the fans who support it. Church has done an admirable job day in and day out; he doen't deserve to be stuck playing alongside this group of former ball players and the two young world winds (Reyes and Wright) who have already entered the twilight of their careers (legends in their own minds). How can you fire the manager? how about starting off with the pitching coach, the hitting coach, the 3rd base coach who sent a runner from 3rd on a short fly ball with the bases loaded making the 3rd out. What about releasing Alou, threatening not to resign Delgado, sending Wagner to AA after making us lose 3 games. What are the Wilpon nit-wits going to do when they open their new ballpark next near and no one comes. They have provided a crappy product and are charging their customers way too much money to come in and be disappointed. Face it Wilpon family, you and Omar don't know baseball ... pack up and leave town. You have crushed this former Mets fan via your total lack of destruction of this ball club. Making Hank Steinbrenner a Genius
Leave it to the Wilpons to make Hank Steinbrenner's DH-whining seem intelligent by comparison. I am sure Willie took the axe to cover his coaches but to make them fly out to California to do so is stupid. Firing them in the middler of the night simply points up the cowardice of the Wilpons and Minaya. No class at all. At lease the Paysons had no money to justify poor judgment back in the day. Classless Cowards
I wasn't the biggest fan of Willie's but i thought he should have stayed a while longer as the team was playing better as of late. The Wilpons treatment was disgusting, classless cowards. Minaya should have gone with him as he is responsible for putting this mess of a team together without backup options. I am embarrased to be a Mets fan today. Making Yankee fans happy
Nothing like adding fuel to the fire that burns in many a Yankees fan gut in hating the Mets! That said you don't need to be anything but a BASEBALL fan to realize the stupidity of this move. Especially after beating a damn good team in the Angels. And let's keep racism out of this. What Mets fan wouldn't have wanted Vlad Guerrero in the outfield the last three or four years. And what about Jose who is finally coming around? Nothing like adding fuel to the fire that burns in many a Yankees fan gut in hating the Mets! If a Man is judged by his Actions
Mr Minaya has a long way to go before he will be considered a Man. Taking full responsibility for treating an employee, a team member with such incredible disrespect speaks volumes as to the character of Mr. Minaya. His legacy as the first Latin Americangeneral manager is a poor one. Willie Randolph is a class act, and a credit to the sport Mr Minaya has a long way to go before he will be considered a Man. Minaya -classless bufoon
Its sad that the Wilpons took Minaya as the general manager because he was a failure in Montreal and started doing the very same things with the Mets. Willie is a class act placed in a very difficult situation with a team he had no input in choosing. Instead of firing managers they should start firing gm's.Hopefully Willie lands with a team that will end up in the World Series he desrves it . The Wilpons choice of Minaya shows their total disregard of the fans who are diehard supporters of their team. Shame on you !! four and a half years ago Kris benson said that Omar was trying to make the mets hispanic. He still is anjd they stink more now than then. An Example of a GM past his prime.
This is an example of 2 things. First thing Willie was not given a championship team. The Mets came into this season as the favorites. With an outfield that 2/3 were questions mark. Church was an unknown that they lucked out with. Alou is a star that you can%u2019t keep on the field. There is not a backup outfielder on the team that can step in and be an everyday outfielder. Both the starting and relief pitching was also suspect. The pitching has actually has been better than expected. The problem has been the starters and relievers have not been able to be good in the same game. The second thing is that Minaya caved in to the pressure of the press. If he would have came out an stood by Willie 100 % and got the replacement players like a GM is supposed to do this would not have been an issue. This is an example of 2 things. Right move wrong time
Bad decisions by Willie since 2006 taking pitchers out who should have finished and other player moves that cost the Mets TWO seasons, 2006 and the collapse of 2007 and should have been fired at the end of last season or the end of this the 2008 season if the Mets went nowhere. Willie and Omar should be gone. tool little far too late or actually in this case too early since this season is doomed from the get go. New ball bark better mean a new qualified team that know HOW to win. Bench Coach????
Adding insult to injury Omar hires a bench coach, Jerry Manual as the Manager? They couldn't even have the class to already have a legit manager in line prior to firing Willie? The overall management of the NY Mets has been a joke and continues in its tradition and I have been a true blue Met fan sinced 1964! I can be a better GM! Omar Destroyed the METS
Omar continues to bring race into baseball. Omar, your job is to get the BEST players for the team REGARDLESS of race. Instead, you loaded the team with your OLD, TIRED, INJURED, Latino buddies. Shame on you. I'm all for great Latino players, as well asgreat Asian, Black and White players. It's time for you to leave baseball for good Mr. Minaya... Omar continues to bring race into baseball. Perhaps Willie needed to go, but...
There are ways of letting a decent guy go, and there are lousy ways. THIS was a classless, indecent way of doing it. Omar shoulders a good bit of blame for the way the Mets are playing-as do players. Firing a manager away from home-and in the middle of the night borders on the obscene. There are ways of letting a decent guy go, and there are lousy ways. Amazing !
After listening to Minaya's rambling dissertation yesterday afternoon, I better understand how he put together such a poor mix of players (elderly, broken down, etc.) He does a terrible job of expressing himself ... he repeated the same few things dozens of times. At one point, he told reporters that he takes full responsibility for the Mets lousy record. Well then why didn't he do the RIGHT THING and step down from his position? Thanks to his blundering, Mets fans will have to wait years (after a competant GM is brought on board) to re-build their farm system as well as the team in Flushing. If only Omar could get himself to choose players by their skill level and abilities rather than by their nationality. Minaya is a ZERO ... HE MUST GO!
