NJ Launches 511 Traffic Information Line

TRENTON, NJ (AP)  -- Motorists can get free real-time traffic information in New Jersey by calling 511.

The Transportation Department has been getting 6,000 calls a month since it quietly started testing the service.

Once it's fully operational next spring, motorists will have access to the same information that's available on the DOT's traffic Web site.

The state is divided into 10 regions and the system monitors more than 100 highways, including the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

DOT spokeswoman Erin Phalon tells The Star-Ledger of Newark the results have been good and the feedback has been positive.
