New York Day Care Center Evacuated Due to Fumes

SOUTHEAST, N.Y. (AP) -- A children's day care facility and other businesses at a shopping center north of New York City have been evacuated because of high levels of the odorless and colorless gas carbon monoxide.
The toxic gas leaked Tuesday afternoon from the Lakeview Plaza shopping center's Wings Over Water swimming school, where workers were using gas-powered cleaning machines. Carbon monoxide detector alarms went off.

Six businesses were evacuated.
Putnam County emergency services officials say children at the Creative Kids child care center were taken outside to a play area.
A swimming school spokeswoman says she's thankful no injuries were reported.
Carbon monoxide is created when gasoline, oil, wood or propane is burned. It causes about 300 deaths a year nationwide. |
