NYPD, WTC Agree on Ground Zero Security
|
NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Police Department and the World Trade Center site's owner have worked out a security agreement on how to best protect ground zero against terrorism.
The NYPD will have at the lower Manhattan site a special unit to patrol the area. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will have primary responsibility for security at the PATH train station there.

City officials say the two agencies will develop a strategy to police streets, private office towers and public facilities, including the Sept. 11 memorial.
The details of the agreement are being worked out.
The NYPD and Port Authority have disagreed on who should police the area since hijacked jetliners destroyed the World Trade Center. Before Sept. 11, security was largely the responsibility of the Port Authority. |
