New Jersey Turnpike Authority Drops Lawsuit Against Dead Drivers

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (AP)  -- The New Jersey Turnpike Authority admits it made a mistake suing two dead motorists for damage to the toll road.

LISTEN: Peter Haskell reports that these lawsuits are common, at least in non-fatal incidents.

Four people died and four were injured when a truck loaded with bricks rear-ended a car last year, triggering a chain reaction crash in Teaneck.

Turnpike officials were seeking $10,000 for damage to the roadway.

But they had the lawsuit dismissed, saying they don't target people involved in fatal accidents.

Theresa and Charles Christmas of Queens, N.Y., and their two-year-old daughter were killed when the truck hit their car.

Norma Ryan of Voorhees was killed when the truck flipped onto her vehicle.

The truck driver is charged with careless driving.
