New Times Square New Year's Ball is More Energy Efficient
|
NEW YORK (AP) -- The new high-tech ball that will drop at Times Square next New Year's Eve can flaunt millions of hues. But the color that's getting the most attention is green.
The ball's aluminum skeleton, and a ``skin'' made of Waterford crystal panels, covers thousands of energy-efficient, light-emitting diodes.
Even though it's twice as bright as the old ball, the new one will use about half the wattage.
It also can display video.
A spokesman for Waterford Wedgwood U.S.A., Peter R. Cheyney, estimates the crystal on the 1,200 pound ball equals about 500 goblets. |
