Nonprofit Used Government Money for Beer and Video Games

HEMPSTEAD, NY (AP)  -- A nonprofit organization on Long Island that helps troubled teens is accused of using public money to buy beer and violent video games.

An audit by the Nassau County comptroller alleges that the Leadership Training Institute in Hempstead also paid bonuses to its workers in violation of its contract with the county.

Comptroller Howard Weitzman calls it the worst case of fiscal abuse he's seen by a nonprofit organization.

Leadership Training Institute president Mel Jackson denies any wrongdoing. He says the games were purchased, but were no more violent than what is shown on television. He says a case of beer may have been mistakenly purchased.

The institute describes itself as helping ``marginalized individuals, families and communities.''
