Official Wants Subway Sound Gap Filled

NEW YORK (AP) -- A top transit official wants all New York City subway stations to have public address systems within ``the next couple of years.''

NYC Transit President Howard Roberts Jr. says 86 stations - almost 1 in every 5 - don't have sound systems now. He wants to fill in those gaps so officials can make announcements to all 468 stations station from a single control room.

Roberts isn't specifying the potential cost of the project. He says he's working to line up money for it.

Transit managers have said that in the past, sound systems have been installed only as part of major upgrades to various stations.
