NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- It could soon cost you $8 to get over the George Washington Bridge and through the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.
The Star-Ledger is reporting that after the elections next week, the Port Authority plans to seek a toll hike of at least $2. On its Hudson River crossings and PATH Rail fares are also going up. The paper is also reporting that the $1 E-Z Pass discount might be done away with.
This would be the first fare hike since 2000 and while the Port Authority declined to speak to WCBS Reporter Catherine Cioffi on tape they did send a statement:
Port Authority Spokesman Steve Sigmund: "We have stated for nearly a year that to fund our 10 year capital program -- including security costs that have risen by $400 million a year since 9/11, the ARC Tunnel, completely replacing the PATH system, maintaining the bridges and tunnels and rebuilding the World Trade Center, eventually a toll increase will be necessary. That position has not changed."
