SOMERS, CT (AP) -- A Connecticut death row inmate is recovering from minor injuries after a fight with another convicted killer at Northern Correctional Institution, state police said Thursday.
Russell Peeler Jr., convicted of ordering the killings of child and his mother, was treated at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford and taken back to prison after the Wednesday afternoon scuffle, police said.
The alleged assailant, fellow death row inmate Daniel Webb, was not injured in the incident, police said. They described it as a brief, minor fist fight that corrections officers quickly broke up.
No weapons were involved, police said Thursday.
Peeler, 36, is on death row for ordering the 1999 killings of 8-year-old Leroy ``B.J.'' Brown Jr. and his mother, Karen Clarke, in their Bridgeport duplex. The boy was expected to be the key witness against Peeler in the fatal shooting of Clarke's boyfriend.
Webb, 45, has been on death row since 1991. He faces execution for the 1989 kidnapping and murder in Hartford of Diane Gellenbeck, a 37-year-old Connecticut National Bank vice president.
State police detectives are investigating the scuffle between Webb and Peeler. They will share their findings with the Tolland State's Attorney's Office, which will determine if charges are warranted.
The state Department of Correction also will conduct an internal investigation.
