I joined WCBS in December 2005. This is my first job in radio, after working in newspapers for a few years (Daily News, The Jewish Week, and NYU's newspaper). As a full-time desk assistant I help set up the midday shift. I also work as a substitute writer and producer.
Growing up in Brooklyn, my family always listened to WCBS, and when I visit my old neighborhood I meet lots of people who listen to our station. So many listeners feel personally connected to 880 and respond to the immediacy of the medium. Radio news can have such a strong impact on people's lives - whether it's a story about something happening halfway around the world or right down the block. My goal as a journalist is to help people make sense of this increasingly complicated, globalized world.
Fun facts:
- My dad is an English teacher and my mom is a librarian, which explains why I enjoy reading and writing...and why I'm so bad at math!
- I competed twice in the National Spelling Bee. Although none of the obscure words I learned are generally used in normal conversation, the experience did leave me with a lifelong aversion to typos.
- My name is the Hebrew version of "Rebecca." I learned Hebrew at an all-girls Jewish school from first grade through high school.
- I've been to Jerusalem, Oslo, and Paris.
- My hobbies include buying books and reading them (I have an expensive hardcover habit...), downloading new music for my iPod, volunteering at a local homeless shelter, and watching terrible reality television.
- San Francisco and Seattle have beautiful ballparks but my favorite baseball memories are all from Yankee Stadium.
