Armed Man Barricades Himself Inside an NJ Home

HO-HO-KUS, N.J. (AP)  -- Police are speaking with an armed man in an effort to end a standoff that began several hours ago when the man barricaded himself inside his northern New Jersey home.

Officers first responded to the Ho-Ho-Kus residence around 9 a.m. Friday, after the unidentified man's girlfriend called police and said he had two guns and was depressed.

They immediately began talking with the man by telephone, but he remained inside the residence as of 3 p.m. He was reported to be calm and listening to negotiators.

The Bergen County SWAT team is at the scene.

A nearby elementary school in the Bergen County town about 20 miles northwest of New York City was put on lockdown as a precaution, and police diverted traffic off busy Route 17.
