Stratford Mayor: Ex-Mayor Made 'Improper Payoffs'

STRATFORD, CT (AP)  -- Stratford's new mayor says former Mayor James Miron approved excessive and potentially improper payouts to himself and five staffers just before they left office two weeks ago.

The Connecticut Post reports that records released Tuesday by new Mayor John Harkins show Miron signed off on $224,000 in payouts. Town attorneys believe Miron and the staffers were not entitled to about $40,000 of the money.

Town attorneys are trying to determine if any taxpayer money was spent illegally, including payments for accrued six and vacation time that couldn't be fully substantiated. Records show Miron got more than $44,000 for vacation and sick time when he left office.

Miron, who lost last month's election to Harkins, insists there was no wrongdoing and claims Harkins is lying.
