HAUPPAUGE, NY (AP) -- Some 300 large food stores and department stores in Suffolk County will soon have to collect and recycle plastic shopping bags or face fines, under a new law approved by the Suffolk County Legislature Tuesday.
A spokesman for County Executive Steve Levy said the measure - which passed 17 to 1 - would likely be signed into law next week.
The measure mandates that retailers larger than 10,000 square feet set out collection bins so customers could drop off unwanted plastic bags that otherwise could end up in the trash, landfills and waterways.
Fines for violating the recycling law from $250 to $1,000.
