The 411 Stories of the Day - Friday, November 6, 2009

FORT HOOD SHOOTING...
(AP) - The base commander at Fort Hood says soldiers who witnessed a shooting rampage that left 13 people dead reported that the gunman shouted ``Allahu Akbar!'' before opening fire at the Texas post. Lt. Gen. Robert Cone told NBC's ``Today'' show that suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, made the comment, which is Arabic for ``God is great!'' before the rampage Thursday that also left 30 people wounded. Military officials say they are still piecing together what may have pushed Hasan, an Army psychiatrist trained to help soldiers in distress, to turn on his comrades.

OBAMA/ECON BILL...
(AP) - Longtime jobless people and prospective homebuyers will be the main beneficiaries when President Barack Obama signs a $24 billion economic stimulus bill today. The White House signing ceremony comes a day after the House voted 403-12 for the measure. The Senate approved it unanimously on Wednesday. The bill also includes tax cuts for struggling businesses.

NAZIS...
(CBS) - Not only did the Nazis round up millions of Jews and send them to extermination camps, they also charged them for the ride. A report today details how the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the German national railway, raked-in more than $600 million by making Jews pay two-pfennings-per-kilometer - about 18 cents in 2009 money - for their final journey. Now the current German government, the owner of the railway, is being asked to make reparations.

DROID...
(CBS) - Is this one the iPhone-killer? The nation's largest cellular carrier, Verizon Wireless, today begins selling its highly-touted Droid smartphone from Motorola. The Droid, which uses an operating system from Google called Android, has a higher-resolution screen than the iPhone, as well as other features the iPhone lacks such as a real keyboard and a removable battery and memory card. It also comes with a free GPS mapping program offering spoken turn-by-turn directions to your destination. What the Droid doesn't have is the 100,000 apps that are now available for the iPhone.
