"When people lose their jobs, it takes a little time for them to lose their apartment, and then they generally stay with a family member. We are only beginning to see people who have lost their jobs in the last year beginning to come in, " says Harriet McDonald, executive vice president of the Doe Fund.
The Doe Fund puts people to work sweeping New York streets. You might have seen them - the men in blue ready, willing, and able.
McDonald says, "What we also have seen is an absolute rise in the number of homeless veterans." Some of these are veterans from the Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
There are ex-offenders too.
McDonald says, "The one thing that is common is people cannot get jobs." She says, now more than ever, the Doe Fund needs volunteers and donations. They need you to help them help the homeless.
