Verizon Activates "Dark Zone" Cell Tower

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)  -- Verizon Wireless has activated the first of a dozen planned cell phone towers along the Adirondack Northway to fill a nearly 50-mile service gap along a remote stretch of the highway that connects Albany and Montreal.

Verizon says the North Hudson site will provide coverage along approximately six miles of Interstate-87 near Exit 29. It has three other cell sites in Lewis, Schroon Falls and Warrensburg under construction, saying they should start operating this year.

A Brooklyn man crashed and froze to death in January 2007 along the highway in the so-called ``dark zone'' in North Hudson, unable to call for help.
