NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Around 8:10 this morning a 20 inch main ruptured in front of the Fortunoff store on 57th and 5th avenue. The break closed that store and an adjacent office building.
57th street is one of the busiest east-west streets in the city. Con-Ed and the Buildings department are both on scene trying to determine if the break has caused any structural damage to the Fortunoff store or its surrounding buildings. 57th street is closed at both 5th and 6th avenues.

According to NY1, As a result of cracks found in the basement of 3 West 57th Street, the FDNY ordered a precautionary evacuation of the building. 7 West 57th Street was also evacuated as a precaution.
One witness told NY1 "I'm walking down the street and all of the sudden I see a little peak in the road, almost like the earth's crust lifted up," said one witness. "Then dirty water kept on spewing up and slowly filled the street." |
