New Newark Arena Built Too Close to Street
|
NEWARK, NJ (AP) -- Newark's new Prudential Center arena is too close to the street to shield it from a terrorist attack.
With the opening two weeks away, officials are devising a plan to use concrete barriers to close Edison Place and Mulberry Street to keep vehicles from the entrance.
Several businesses fear they'll be hurt by the closings.
Neither Mayor Cory Booker nor Police Director Garry McCarthy will say who is to blame for the oversight.
McCarthy tells The Star-Ledger of Newark as far as he can tell, a homeland security survey was never done.
McCarthy says the arena, which will be home to the New Jersey Devils, will be safe on opening day.
