STONY BROOK, NY (AP) -- A ground breaking is being held Tuesday for a $35 million research center on Long Island that will study how to make alternative energy affordable to average people. The Advanced Energy Research Technology Center is a partnership of the state government, local businesses and scientists.
Robert Catell of National Grid-KeySpan Energy is a co-chairman of the center being built on the campus of Stony Brook University.
He says it will study how to make solar, wind, geothermal, hydrogen and biomass affordable for residents. Catell says alternative energy is being used in a small way but the goal is to make it a major part of our nation's energy program.
The center itself - will be one of the most energy efficient buildings in the country. Catell says it will be only one of 26 in the nation to receive the top Platinum rating from the U.S. Green Building Council in Washington, D.C.
