Rob Bertrand - Technician

On air.  Online.  Onsite.  This rallying cry of WCBS perhaps most succinctly describes Rob Bertrand's role at the station.

He became an engineer for WCBS in 2005 and is one of the three people responsible for the day-to-day technical operation of the station.  If he's not in his office handling the mounds of paperwork that keep the station's gears turning, you might find him in a studio doing maintenance, in the newsroom assisting a staffer with an editing workstation, or in the Technical Operations Center rewiring something.

Getting all the sound you hear on WCBS in from the field is no simple task, and Rob works to maintain and develop the many methods we use to get our reporters on the air.  From laptops to land lines to cell phones to wireless internet devices, Rob works with our team to make sure they have the tools they need to bring you the latest news from the streets of the tri-state area.  He also produces many of our remote broadcasts and serves as the supervising engineer for the New York Yankees broadcasts on WCBS.

At least once a week you'll find him just off the coast of City Island in the Bronx at the WCBS transmitter site.  Along with his colleagues at WFAN and a certain other news radio station in the city, he works to keep WCBS sounding its best, compliant with FCC rules, and on-the-air 99.999 percent of the time!  There's never a dull moment at 'transmitter island'…

A 2001 graduate of Rutgers University - New Brunswick, Rob spent four years at Greater Media's WCTC and WMGQ after college before joining WCBS, where he honed his broadcast engineering skills to become one of the youngest major-market engineers in the country.   He remains active with advising and engineering his college radio station, 90.3 The Core - WVPH FM, and continues to work to bring young people into the exciting field of radio.  He was a 2000 Summer Fellow with the International Radio and Television Society in NYC and is a member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers.  He also studied electrical engineering at DeVry University in North Brunswick, NJ.   Raised in West Orange, NJ, he has resided in Central Jersey for over a decade.
