Spitzer Story Slows NY Times Web Site

NEW YORK (AP)  -- It seems when people heard about the sex scandal involving New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, most had the same idea. And that was a bad idea when it came to the New York Times' Web site, where the story first broke that the governor let on to aides that he was involved in a prostitution ring. As people logged on and began checking out the reports, the paper's Web site slowed noticeably.

Normally the Times site takes about three seconds to load. But the average load times increased to more than 20 seconds during the time when interest in the story peaked. The slowdown was reported by Keynote Systems, a company that measures Web site performance. Hours after the Times posted its report, Spitzer held a news conference to apologize to his family and the people of New York. However, he didn't specify what he was apologizing for.
