Protesters Clash with Police at Chinese Consulate in NYC
|
NEW YORK (AP) -- Police officers clashed with protesters today during a raucous demonstration outside the Chinese consulate in Manhattan.
Several people on both sides were injured and there was broken glass in the street. Police made several arrests.
An organizer of the demonstration says the trouble started when some picketers began throwing rocks at the consulate. One activist with a bloodied finger said police overreacted and began shoving protesters to the ground.
The clash was short-lived and hundreds of ethnic Tibetans continued to demonstrate peacefully outside the West Side building.
Today marked the second day of protests in New York and around the world over a crackdown by Chinese troops on rioting Buddhist monks in Tibet.
