Dole joins those recalling cantaloupes from Honduras

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP)  -- Dole Fresh Fruit Co. on Friday joined firms recalling Honduran cantaloupes grown, packed and shipped by an independent third-party grower, Agropecuaria Montelibano, after they were linked to a salmonella outbreak in the U.S. and Canada.

Dozens of cases of salmonella in 16 states, including at least 14 that resulted in hospitalization, sparked the recall of the exported melons. The Food and Drug Administration  blocked imports of cantaloupes from Honduras-based Agropecuaria Montelibano after the illnesses were reported.

Two other companies, Chiquita Brands International Inc. and Simply Fresh Fruit Inc., issued recalls of their own Thursday. Chiquita recalled whole cantaloupes grown, packed and shipped by Agropecuaria Montelibano while Simply Fresh Fruit targeted certain cut fruit products.

The Westlake Village, Calif.-based subsidiary of Dole Food Co. said in a statement issued Friday night that the recalled cantaloupes were distributed for sale throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada in cardboard cartons with the brand ``Dole'' and ``PRODUCT OF HONDURAS'' printed on each of the side panels.

Consumers with questions about the Dole recall can visit the FDA Web site at www.fda.gov for more information or contact the Dole Consumer Center at 800-232-8888.
