Hudson River Toll and Fare Hikes Being Announced by the Port Authority Today

NEW YORK (AP / WCBS 880) -- It's going to cost more to drive into New York City from New Jersey.

The Port Authority is expected to announce a proposed fare hike today.

It calls for millions of commuters to shell out an extra $2, and means E-ZPass users can say goodbye to rush-hour discounts.

If the plan is approved, drivers would have to pay $8 during rush hour to enter New York City from New Jersey -- the first such hike in six years. The Port Authority has three Hudson River vehicular crossings - the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, and Holland Tunnel.

People who take the PATH train would also see a fare jump, to $2 per trip from $1.50.

The proposed hikes must be approved by the governors of both states and undergo a series of public hearings.

That will likely take several months.

It was reported in October that these toll hikes were likely.
