Sheryl Santi Luks - President Santi Express a Valley Cottage New York based moving company founded more than 30 years ago.

"I feel my business is recession proof. While there is a substantial slowdown in the moving end of the business, the storage end is way up. People will always move, while the phones are not ringing off the hook, they are ringing. A lot of last minute moves, and we are ready to accommodate. I have prepared my men (and women in the office) that we will not make a lot of money this year, but we will be around when the market eases up and make up for it then"

Todd Duffy - Co-Founder of Duffy & Atkins, a Manhattan based boutique law firm that handles struggling businesses

"As a firm focused on restructuring, we actually do very well during economic downturns as people begin to realize that they have overreached and then seek to take strategic corrective action. Although the need to restructure can hit a small or medium-sized business – or even a relatively well-off individual – at any time, we find that our business picks up significantly during downturns. Another thing we have observed is that, contrary to conventional wisdom, smaller businesses are actually among the first to be affected – probably because they have less of a “cushion.”

Jeff Nyikos - COO of the Westchester Based Leros Point to Point Limo Company

"Today's challenging environment of increasing operating costs and a potential for a downturn in existing business necessitated thinking outside the box. One of our major concerns from an operating standpoint is the price of fuel … we are the first limousine service in Westchester County to run Lincoln Town Cars that run on Natural Gas and we recently started up a new division called Preferred Mobility, which is a high end private transportation service for individuals with mobility issues….All of our ideas were the result of listening to all our sources, employees, and clients"

Geri Brewster - Westchester Based Nutritionist, Educator, Clinician, and Health Coach

"My business, as I'm sure most others, has been experiencing the wake of the current economic slowdown. However, with a little creativity there is usually a way to make things work for you and strengthen your business in the process. Cross training my staff for greater office scheduling flexibility as well as providing incentives to clients who refer others as an option to high cost advertising has also helped. With a little creativity, it is easy to discover new ways of keeping healthy and saving money. As a business owner, staying flexible with yourself and the needs of your clients is the only way to survive."

Note: After several weeks of hearing from Small Business Owners who sent in entries to be chosen for our June 12th panel on "surviving the slowdown in the suburbs, the four business owners above have been selected to sit on our panel. We expect a lively discussion with business to business ideas on how to keep sales going even in difficult economic times.

We thank all of those who wrote to us about our June event.

We hope to see you all at the brand new Ritz Carlton in Westchester June 12th. Come prepared to learn and be heard.
