Tom Kaminski

See Tom at the Lincoln Tunnel Challenge!

Is this a cool job? You bet. Since 1988, I've had the privilege of flying over New York City and the Tri-State area for 5 hours a day.

Memories. So many things I've covered from my 1500-foot perch. Spectacular crashes where, miraculously, no one was injured. Minor collisions where, unfortunately, someone has lost their life. Parades of ships in New York Harbor. Parades of people up the "Canyon of Heroes". People on rooftops holding up signs for me to see. People on rooftops doing things they didn't know I COULD see. (Rule of thumb for rooftops or open windows: if you can see me, I can see you.)

And always, for the rest of my life, the memories of the events of September 11, 2001, which unfolded directly in front of me. I've been told my report at 8:48 that morning was the first in the world. Since then, along with you, I have watched our city mourn, recover and start to rebuild. I fly past Ground Zero four or five times a day, just like I flew past the towers four and five times a day. I'll never forget. I can't.

While Chopper 880 can get me from place to place quickly, I can't be everywhere at once. That's where you can help. If you spot a traffic tie-up, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Be a WCBS Cellmate and call us with your traffic tip, anytime, anywhere, at 212-975-8888.
