Double-Dutch Could be a H.S. Sport

NEW YORK (WCBS-AM)  -- Double Dutch, the popular jump-roping pastime, could soon become a varsity sport in New York City public schools.

The Public School Athletic League is considering adding the game to school teams as early as next spring.

A demonstration clinic was held recently at Brooklyn's Boys & Girls High School to gauge interest.

The activity, often seen on sidewalks in the summer, involves jumpers hopping between two ropes twirled like eggbeaters by turners.

Players earn points based on speed and innovative moves.

Ruth Payne, coach of the Jammin' Jumpers in Brooklyn, came up with the idea as a way to attract more girls to athletics.
