ISLAND PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- A little boy was hospitalized in critical condition after being pulled from a Long Island pool close to death.
Police officials say the 17-month-old toddled out of his family's sight for just a few minutes Saturday when he somehow found his way into a relative's backyard pool in Island Park.
His mother found him floating face down. He wasn't breathing and had no detectable pulse when police arrived.
But after getting CPR at the scene and in the ambulance, the boy was revived at Long Beach Hospital. He was later transferred to Schneider Children's Hospital.
The accident is just the latest in a string of dangerous summer pool mishaps.
A 14-year-old Brooklyn boy drowned in a pool at home in Aquebogue on Thursday. Earlier in the week, a 2-year-old drowned at a pool in Huntington.
