NEW YORK (AP) -- A Staten Island mom is learning her own lesson after stealing a teacher's purse during her son's first-grade graduation ceremony: Crime doesn't pay.
Traci Holmes is facing a 90-day prison sentence and five years' probation after pleading guilty Wednesday to grand larceny.
Authorities said Holmes went into an empty classroom during the graduation ceremony at the end of May and stole the teacher's purse. They said she also ran up more than $300 on one of the teacher's credit cards.
Holmes got a split sentence, meaning she'll serve a portion of the jail time, under threat of completing the sentence if she violates her probation.
