NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- UPDATE (5:53p) Service is now being restored for NJ Transit, spokesman Dan Stessel warns riders to expect significant delays for the next for hours.
UPDATE (5:45p) Amtrak has isolated the problem to a power situation near Philadelphia.
"NY Penn station 80,000 customers a day, so we are looking at potentially tens of thousands of customers are effected," said Stessel.
Stessel is recommending that commuters take advantage of the cross-honoring services made available which will hold even after NJ Transit service is restored.
Service is temporarily suspended on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line trains, said Dan Stessel, spokesman for NJ Transit.
No trains are moving on either line; they were brought to the nearest stations as a precaution. Midtown Direct trains are being routed into and out of the Hoboken terminal, Stessel said. Commuters who usually take the Midtown Direct out of Penn Station should take a PATH train to Hoboken instead. PATH trains are cross-honoring
NJ Transit is working with private carrier buses at Port Authority to determine an alternate method of travel. More information will follow as it becomes available.
Amtrak said the Northeast Corridor had "a low-voltage power condition," Stessel said. They are working to figure out the cause of the problem but do not know how long before it will be resolved.
