The death was confirmed Wednesday by Charles Carnesi, a lawyer for her grandson John ``Junior'' Gotti.

Newsday, which reported the death on its Web site, cited relatives as saying she died of natural causes at her home in Valley Stream, Long Island, on Tuesday night.

Known to family and friends as Fanny, Philomena Gotti died one day before her grandson was due in federal court in Florida on racketeering charges.

She and her husband, John J. Gotti, had 16 children. Five of their sons were involved in the mob, with John, the so-called Teflon Don, achieving the most notoriety.

He became boss of the Gambino family in 1985 and went to prison in 1992 on federal racketeering charges. He died in 2002.
