New Rochelle Cops Run Out of Gas Money
|
NEW ROCHELLE, NY (AP) -- Police officers in one suburban New York community are being told to walk, bike or ride Segways to conserve fuel.
LISTEN: City Manager Charles Strome Talks to WCBS 880
Officers with the Police and Community Together unit of New Rochelle will have to forgo using patrol cars as fuel prices continue to spike.
The unit's commanding officer says the department also sees it as an opportunity for the unit to have more personal contact with the community. He says officers in cruisers will continue to patrol the city.
City Manager Charles B. Strome says the change is not a reduction in services, just a ``redeployment'' of resources as the city faces increased fuel costs.
Strome says the police department exhausted its 2008 fuel budget.
New Rochelle is about 24 miles northeast of New York City in Westchester County.
