HARRISON, N.Y. (AP) -- A bucket of swimming pool cleaning chemicals has exploded while a man was mixing them in his backyard just north of New York City. The man and a neighbor have been hospitalized.
Firefighters in Harrison say area residents heard a loud bang Thursday morning. They say the explosion was caused by William Colangelo mixing a bucket of granular chlorine with water.
A neighbor ran over to check on Colangelo. Both have been taken to a hospital to see if they've been exposed to chlorine fumes.
Police say any injuries likely are minor.
Firefighters say the chemical reaction and heat made the bucket dangerous for two hours but there was no fire and the contamination was confined to the yard. They say no one else was in danger despite the strong chlorine smell.
