MELVILLE, N.Y. (AP) -- A spokeswoman says Nassau County has had to put off plans for aerial spraying against the West Nile virus for the first time since 1999.
Health Department spokeswoman Cynthia Brown says Thursday night's spraying was postponed because winds gusted above 10 mph. She says the county anticipates spraying next week but doesn't have an exact date.
Three recent deaths in the Long Island county may be linked to West Nile, a mosquito-borne infection that can cause serious illness or death.
Officials say 10 infections have been reported in the county this year. Two cases were reported in 2007.
The spraying begins at dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.
